Is it safe to wear a smartwatch to bed?

In this article we will mainly focus on a common issue, wearing smartwatch during your sleep. If we look at the queries people make in Google regarding this issue, we will see a lot of worries.

People ask so many different questions just regarding this issue. So, we have taken up this as our holy responsibility to answer some of the most common worries in this article.

Sleep Tracking:

Well, that could be out of nowhere for you if you are not that familiar with the features of smartwatches, but for those who already are using such devices, this is not new. Top of the line smartwatches all have ‘sleep tracking’ sensors to monitor the quality of your sleep. However, the readings we get from our smartwatches are not all that Clinically accurate.

To find out more accurate data, you will need bigger equipment from BIG research labs! Is that even possible in your bedroom? NO!! So, we will have to be satisfied with the technology we already have on our wrists.

Sleep tracking sensors assume that you do not move that much in your bed, and based on that assumption, the smartwatches only track your movement. So, as per its assumption, if you are moving in your sleep you are not having a good quality sleep, and vice versa! Besides, the heart rate monitor is also gathering your heart rate data in your sleep.

With these two data, your sleep quality. It is somehow helpful. Now, to track your sleep you need to wear the smartwatch in your bed! Thus people are worried if it is healthy to wear one in bed! Let us answer the questions we have gathered so far.

Is it safe to wear a smartwatch to bed?

It is a very simple question so we will answer this question simply. First of all, if you have bought a new smartwatch, you will at least want to test the features and sleep tracking may be one of those features.

If you have been wearing your wristwatch for a long time, you may not feel any discomfort even in bed. People even take showers with their wristwatches on! So, the first issue will be discomfort. If you do not feel comfortable, it will only disturb your sleep. In that case it is not safe to wear it in your bed.

However, just for once, you may wear it to check sleep tracking. Wear the watch in a comfortable way. Do not block blood flow. That can result in serious health issues.

So, if you are comfortable you can wear it, if not then do not wear it in bed.

Is It Safe To Wear Smartwatch While Sleeping?

It is only safe if you do not feel any discomfort wearing smartwatch while sleeping. The device does not have any intention of harming you, but if you do not feel like wearing it, you can just leave it on the bedside table.

Is it safe to wear a smartwatch all the time?

If you are always in need of checking your heart rate, or if you need to monitor your heart rate because of some medical issue, you will have to wear a smartwatch all the time. It is safe only if you do not wear it too tightly around your wrist.

Otherwise, even the doctor may suggest you wear one and then the doctor can gather the heart rate data and find out if there is any abnormality. In this case, it is safer.

Is it safe to wear a smartwatch while pregnant?

Actually, there has been research on this topic. According to Grym, K., Niela-Vilén, H., Ekholm, E. et al. in the research paper, BMC Pregnancy Childbirth 19, 34 (2019), wearing smartwatch or smart bands is safe during pregnancy.

They suggested that it is possible to constantly monitor pregnant ladies' health by gathering data from the smartwatch they are wearing. They have vouched for this possibility because it is safe only after a careful evaluation of the device they will be wearing. The devices need to be comfortable.

Should I wear smart watch while sleeping?

Well, it is not a ‘should’ situation! Wearing your smart watch while sleeping is always optional if you do not have any medical issues! For example, if your doctor or medical center has given you a wrist band or smart band or smart watch just so they can monitor your pacemaker, or heart function, oxygen in your blood, etc., or perhaps if you are pregnant, then you SHOULD actually wear the smart watch or smart band while sleeping. Because, many health changes happen even in your sleep which you may not know but the doctor can diagnose from the data from your watch or band. It is always better to actually ask this to your doctor directly.

Are smart watches safe radiation?

According to some researchers, smart watches do give out traditions. The RF in Bluetooth and Wifi in smartphones cause cumulative exposure to human bodies. This is not really good for health if someone is addicted to smartphones and keeping it with him all the time. Smart watches have the same features and exposures like smartphones because of Bluetooth and wifi signals.

Therefore, if smartphones are not healthy, then smartwatches are not healthy as well. These devices need to pass FCC standards for radiation. If they pass their radiation is safe for health, if not they are not safe.

Does smart watch have side effects?

Some experts say that wearing a smartwatch all the time or all day long can cause harm to your body. Overuse will expose you to radiation from EMF or electromagnetic fields. You may have headaches from overuse of smart watches. Just use when and as long as you feel you need it.
